Khmer Course for Staff in CarGill Company

Even though there is slight problem in diplomatic relationship between Cambodia and Thailand, the overall view of relation of two countries is considerably good, especially in the business field.
Cargill Company is a large, fully integrated poultry processing business with locations in Saraburi and Koraj, Thailand. In the end of July 2010, in its first step, the company will receive 100 Khmer workforce from Cambodia to work in it. As its plan, the number of Khmer workforce to be hired by the company will be reached at the amount of 1000. Due to the large number of Khmer workforce in the company, it needs to improve its staff who get in charge with those workers to have some understandings on Khmer, its culture and language in daily usage. Three lecturers and students, specialist in Khmer, are invited to give lecture on the above topic.
The presence of Khmer workforce in Thailand, especially in Cargill, is the big market for Thai students who have good knowledge in Khmer language i.e. in attending in Khmer Major.

Sampeah Kru Ritual

The rituals of Sampeah Kru (ពិធីសំពះគ្រូ) or Wai Kru (พิธีไหว้ครู) are believed to have derived from ancient animistic beliefs, influenced by the spread of Brahmanism from India. This is evident in the ceremony of traditional dance and music, where specific mention is made to Ishvara and Narayana, along with other Vedic deities.

New Online Khmer-English Dictionary

Frank Smith and others have recently made available a new Khmer-English online dictionary. It is searchable using either English, Khmer or the International Phonetic Alphabet. The interesting thing is that the dictionary itself is not new, rather it is a synthesis of three existing dictionaries…

These resources are primarily based on the two very different editions of the Cambodian-English Dictionary: Cambodian-English Dictionary by Robert K. Headley, Kylin Chhor, Lam Kheng Lim, Lim Hak Kheang, and Chen Chun (1977, Catholic University Press), and Cambodian-English Dictionary by Robert K. Headley, Rath Chim, and Ok Soeum (1997, Dunwoody Press, ISBN 0-931745-78-0)

The 1977 edition draws heavily on traditional Cambodian lexicography; in particular, on the monumental Chuon Nath dictionary (see below). With some 20,000 headwords and almost 25,000 subentries, it is notable for its phonemic and grammatical analyses. Headley ‘77 also provides extensive etymological references, with nearly 10,000 Pali and Sanskrit citations, and hundreds more from Thai, Cham, French, Vietnamese, and a dozen other languages.

The 1997 edition contains more than 50,000 entries. It was compiled with an emphasis on the modern languge, particularly modern words, and expressions used in both written and spoken Cambodian. However, it also contains many entries for literary and poetic forms, and can be used to help in reading classic Cambodian texts. It has less etymological information than the ‘77 edition, but include far more usage (e.g. social level) tagging, and more than two thousand example sentences.

Searches in Khmer orthography will also return entries from the Chuon Nath Khmer Dictionary (1966, Buddhist Institute, Phnom Penh). This classic work represents the high point of pre-war Cambodian lexicography.

Khmer language input uses the Khmer Unicode font system. If you have not installed it yet, Windows users should see the KhmerOS site for download and installation instructions. Linux users can track down the language packages in the repositories. In addition to Khmer Unicode font use in particular programs, Khmer translations are maintained for the Kubuntu andopenSUSE Linux distributions (maybe others?).

Bachelor Degree of Khmer Language in Mahasarakham

Camdodia and Thai are neighboring country . Due to their adjacent borders, both in land and water, their long historical relationship, and their some language structures are similar, many people of these countries, especially ones who lives near the border, could communicate each other through both languages. Most of them, however, could only speak the simple language, namely spoken language. In Thailand many of people who are Khmer descendants can speak Khmer language, which considered as one of dialects in Thailand, fluently but their accents are slightly different from one in Cambodia. Khmer or Thai people who get their knowledge of languages through academic study and could officially use those languages fluently are still poor, so far.
The need of human resource, mentioned above, makes Mahasarakham university to try to launch the Khmer Study Center which is a sub-branch under the Faculty of Humanity and Social Sciences's control. This year is the year that the university has honor to to have its two students in Khmer Major to finish their bachelor degree since its more than four years of opening this class. Be noticed that there are twenty students in Khmer Major in have been attending the faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Mahasarakham University, now days. Though this year there are only two students in the major have completely finished their studies, it is one of the greastest achievments of the university. We hope that in the following years the number of graduated students in Khmer Major will be gradually increased. May the two students who just have obtained the certificate have good future and good job.
